Dogs Get Anxious Too

While most of us are busier than ever with work, school,
kids activities, etc., we should remember that our dogs may
become upset if they are left at home alone during long absences.

Here are some tips from Nicholas Dodman, DVM, the author of
‘If Only They Could Speak’ on how to soothe your pet’s separation anxiety.

• Learn the art of leaving. Fussing over your dog as you walk out
  the door will only add stress. Instead, retime his feeding schedule
  so that you’re putting out his meal and a few treats as you leave,
  making your departure rewarding.

• Keep homecomings low-key. Don’t reciprocate your dog’s
  exuberant greetings. Say ‘hello’ casually, and lavish attention
  only when she has calmed down.

• Encourage independence. That means discouraging his
  clingy behavior when you’re at home. Have your dog play with
  a chew toy for, say, half an hour in another room
  (close the door, if necessary). You may also want to
  discourage him from resting next to you on the couch.

• Consider Doggie Day Care or a Mid-Day Dog Walker.
  Does your dog continue to whine, pace, and act depressed
  when you go? Think about putting her into day care with
  other dogs or hiring a mid-day dog walker so you can be
  sure that your pet is having fun and getting lots of exercise
  and socialization while you’re at work.
