Christmas is a joyous time as decorations glisten to mark the season, music rings through the air, gifts are prepared and received. Homes are often brimming with wonderful smells of delectables cooking and baking: taste bud favorites like hot ciders, Christmas cookies, fudges and candies.
Perhaps it’s because its one of the few times throughout the year—the only holiday for sure-- when all the senses are invoked at the same time, in this season full of sights and sounds, tastes and smells.
For most, the feelings are justifiably prodded on the inside: love and gratitude for Christ, His Holy birth, His love, as well as our own for our friends, family and all those we hold dear.
But there’s more we don’t often realize is happening aside from the traditional things we think about of Christmas. It’s in the memories we’re making for ourselves and others in those moments.
Most adults can remember their favorite Christmases and what made them so. While they are comprised of all of the above, the tangibles fade. The more important, warmer and precious memories are of people, though some are now gone, interacting, sitting around the dinner table laughing, communicating and enjoying each other: grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins.
So as we are enjoying our moments and our reflections, we can remember too, that we are creating and giving warm memories to those around us that will serve them warmly through immeasurable years.
