As the Child Watches

When a parent wants to teach his child of honesty,
He maintains honesty in all his dealings.
As the child watches, absorbs, internalizes
He adopts these within his own feelings.

When a parent wants to teach his child steadfastness,
He must demonstrate this in his own manner,
As the child watches, his priorities are set
Because his parents wave them like a banner.

When a parent wants to teach a child to be loving
Or to have faith, or be gentle or to trust,
As a child watches, he learns what he’s seeing;
By example, he becomes what he feels he must.

It is those things that form his very foundation;
Give him convictions for all he has to face;
Form his inner being, his manner, his spirit,
Shape the ideals and morals he’s to embrace.
