Dedication to a Fallen Local Soldier
Written in memory of a fallen U.S. soldier, Ricky Nelson, in Iraq, who had only spent five months of married life together with his wife, Kristen, before he was deployed on his 2nd tour of duty; the ‘non-violent’ one. He died on April 14, 2008 by a roadside bomb, one week before their 1st anniversary. There was an old oak tree that had fallen in the yard of the bride’s family, so they plan to plant another there in his memory. “Oak trees are strong and Marines are strong,” Kristen’s mother, Teri Fedler said.
Oak Tree
By Sandy Dickson
Like the great oak tree;
Ricky was gentle, well-loved and he didn’t sway
With every wind that blew from any direction.
He was quick to embrace and shelter those he loved
Encompassing them by choice with his protection.
His loved ones watched him grow in as many ways
As one can grow; spiritually and physically,
And were proud of him in all the ways they could be
For his great loving, supporting capacity.
Soothing, comforting, making everything all right,
And like an oak’s branches, serving others around him,
Life gathered where he was, like it does on the oak,
Greeted with the love for life that did abound him.
The oak tree, fallen now, strong but not forgotten,
For the relief and shelter it provided with shade,
And as when wind blows through branches and makes music,
It was music in souls of others that he made.
He created wonderful memories for the many
Who knew him and cling to the precious ones he leaves,
While long remembered, they live in the hearts and souls
Of those close he loved and cherished, in whom he believed. |
