Knee Deep in Summer
Sandy Dickson
There are locusts and katydids and
multitudes of birds,
Humming, buzzing and singing but
not needing words.
There are joyful sounds of children
who squeal in delight,
And lawnmowers sound in the distance
somewhere ‘til the night.
There are oceans and beaches where
people rush to be,
To frolic, splash and to cool down
to feel soothed and free.
The occasional flitting wings
of a bee or fly,
Can be heard often on warm days
as they hurry by.
If you watch, you’ll see bumblebees
hovering on flowers,
And on some afternoons there might be
scattered showers.
Butterflies decorate day’s air,
and fireflies at night
Gracefully blinking and beaming
on route to their plight.
What is the light of a firefly—
just beauty alone?
How do they keep blinking that way,
and where is their home?
The smell of barbecues grilling
captivate most all,
So butter that corn-on-the-cob,
before it is fall.
